The Roman Army
The Roman army was considered to be one of the most advanced of it's time. The Roman army was among the first to be paid a salary. This meant that they were paid to fight all year round, giving them more time to train, one of the reasons why they were so successful. The Roman army consisted of 3 different types of units, a legion was commanded by a legatus and consisted of 5000-6000 soldiers, a cohort that consisted of 500-600 soldiers, and a century commanded by a centurion and consisted of 80-100 soldiers. A Roman army had legionnaires (professional soldiers), auxiliaries (part-time soldiers), who were from areas Rome had conquered or occupied, and volunteers.
